Innovative Duette Urinary Drainage System To Be Featured at APIC Annual Meeting

Poiesis Medical Will Showcase One of the First Alternatives to the Foley Catheter in 75 Years

NASHVILLE – Poiesis Medical will showcase its groundbreaking Duette™ urinary drainage system at the upcoming APIC 2015 Annual Conference. Developed by a veteran urologist, the Duette is designed to replace the Foley urinary catheter.

The new Duette system features a novel dual-balloon configuration that can protect the mucosal lining and integrity of the bladder wall from trauma. “An intact bladder wall is recognized as critical in maintaining the body’s natural, innate host defenses against urinary tract infection” said Charlene Johnson, the Vice President at Poiesis Medical.

The cushioning effect of the Duette’s bladder protection balloon is designed to reduce or eliminate the widely observed, adverse effects of Foley catheterization. Clinically confirmed complications associated with the Foley catheter include bladder spasms, catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), hematuria, blockage, leakage, sepsis and, in some chronic users, even cancer.

CAUTI, a preventable condition, is the largest single source of hospital-acquired infections, costing U.S. hospitals over $3 billion annually according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC estimates that every year more than 560,000 cases of CAUTI occur in the U.S. alone, leading to an attributable 13,000 deaths.

Early clinical experience with the Duette system has been highly favorable, in clinical trials conducted in trauma and intensive care units at two large Florida hospitals, both Level 1 trauma centers. The system has been used with more than 200 patients in clinical trials to date, with only one patient developing a CAUTI. The two facilities that conducted the studies did not change existing catheter protocols for insertion, maintenance or removal.

“These promising results demonstrate the Duette has achieved a success rate that is much better than the national average for patients with urinary catheters,” said Gregory D. Wiita, the Founding Director and CEO of Poiesis Medical. “The initial clinical trials point to the potential of this new technology to have a major, positive effect on patient care and infection control practices, while also achieving substantial cost savings.”

Wiita noted that CDC reports show overall national CAUTI rates in trauma and intensive care units are increasing — a trend that confirms infection preventionists need better tools to fight CAUTIs.

APIC attendees, in addition to viewing the Duette system, will have the opportunity at the Poiesis Medical booth to learn the results of a recent national survey of infection preventionists. Conducted this month among nearly 1,000 clinicians, the survey explored their attitudes toward CAUTI surveillance and prevention.
